"Happiness is like those palaces in fairy tales whose gates are guarded by dragons: we must fight in order to conquer it." pg. 18
ReplyDeleteSometimes you must fight for happiness to be able to obtain the feeling, but once you do it's worth it in the end. In The Count of Monte Cristo, Dantes is willing to do whatever it takes to keep his finacee, Mercedes happy. Dantes believes that as long as he has Mercedes his happiness will last a lifetime.
reading a book
ReplyDelete"Fernand twisted in his chair and wiped away he large beads of sweat which gathered on his forehead like the first raindrops of a storm." p.19
ReplyDeleteThis action shows nervousness from Fernando. It's foreshadowing an event that is bound to happen. This could be due to the statement said before it, where Caderousse mocks Dantes calling Mercedes his husband. Situational irony; we all know Fernando is secretly in love with Mercedes, Dantes just doesn't know it yet.
"That's exactly what worries me," replied Dantes." I don't think man is supposed to attain happiness so easily."
ReplyDeleteThis makes me feel like he is questioning his happiness, but at the same time he is content with his happiness.
"Listen, then: If you refuse to deliver a letter to Mercedes, or atleast let her know im here, some day I'll be hiding behind the door when you come in & I'll break open your head with this stool!"
This makes me think about revenge and being hurtful. Maybe Edmond Dantes is going to get revenge on certain people that didn't treat him right. My question is how far will he go with this so called revenge? :)
"All my opinions are limited to these feelings" (p. 50)
ReplyDeleteThe word limited foreshadows that his opinion is important to that he won't go far. So basically what's important to him is his feelings for Mercedes, his father and respect of Monsier Morrel.
"I swear by the love of christ that I will never leave you while you are still alive." page 63
ReplyDeleteIt makes me think that they have become very close over the time that they have spent together, and they care for eachother greatly. It also makes me feel sad knowing the old man died before they got to escape together.
Saliah & Madison
"Fernand twisted in his chair and wiped away the large beads of sweat which gathered on his forehead like the first raindrops of a storm." pg. 19
ReplyDelete-Fernand was very nervous about what was getting ready to happen, but no one knew exactly what was going to happen yet.
Christy Saji & Nubreichea' West! :)
"Joy sometimes has a strange effect: it can opress us almost as much as sorrow." (page 18)
ReplyDeleteThis quote is a paradox. Sometimes the things you think bring you joy, actually bring you down. He's referring to how happy he is with his wife, so I feel like it could be foreshadowing that something will happen to her to bring him sorrow.
"What a silent party!" (page 18)
ReplyDeleteThis sentence shows that a lot of people at the party might be Dantes enemies and many people might be jealous of him. Niaz, Laura and Caasi.
"Behind them walked Fenard, wearing an evil smile" ( pg. 18)
ReplyDeleteFernard is getting too much satisfaction out of causing problems for Dantes. The word "evil" contrasts strongly the idea of "blessings" in the sentence. Who will suffer from Fernard evil smile?
Abby Keith and Andrea Powell
"Joy sometimes has a strange effect; it can apress us almost as much as sorrow." pg.18
ReplyDeleteJoy gives us different emotions. It can make you sad sometimes, and happy other times depending on the situation. It is known more as happiness, but in this situation it's describing sorrow.
"Behind them walked Fernand wearing an evil smile" (pg.18)-Fernand is getting too much satifiscation out of causing problems for pantes. the word "evil" strongly with the idea of "blessings" in the next sentence. who will suffer from Fernands evil smile?
ReplyDelete"Human knowledge is quite limited."
ReplyDeleteHuman Knowledge isn't limited. We have so many resources that we can use to learn. Plus we are very lucky with everything we have.

ReplyDelete"Fernand twisted in his chair and wiped away the large beads of sweat which gathered on his forhead like the first raindrops of a storm." P.19
ReplyDeleteFernand is nervous about something and I would to know what. When I read this i get a really good picture in my head of what Fernand looks like tight now. I would like to know what he is thinking and what will happen next.
Dexter,Eric,Damion :D
"behind them walked Fernand, wearing an evil smile" (pg 18) you have to fight your way through things. Happiness is like those places in fairytails whose gates are guarded by dragons. You can never know someones true colors that walks behind you.
ReplyDelete"Oh father, will you always be an obsticale to my happiness?" (pg.29)
ReplyDeleteIt seems his father never does anything to make him happy. Him and his father dont get along. He probably thinks his father dont care about him.
